Rewarding Ideation Pod participants with CABIN tokens

Author’s Note: As an experiment, I’m publishing this draft in the forum after just one pass at writing it and without feedback from other DAO members. I do so to test how quickly and collaboratively we as a community can improve and move forward proposals in this Forum. As always, I accept all feedback and constructive criticism for this approach.

tl;dr

After each month, the DAO will have a ranked-choice vote on how to distribute 500 CABIN to Ideation Pod participating teams, including the option to send some of it back to the treasury. Progress reports and other updates from the teams will help with this decision.

Background

Individuals and teams with Cabin-related ideas can incubate them in the Ideation Pod for 1-month with the support of the pod’s Stewards. Then, they can submit a proposal to the DAO for a 3-month funded trial or request an additional month of incubation. The Ideation Pod has 500 CABIN allocated from the DAO treasury to reward these teams. This proposal is to determine the voting mechanism for the DAO to do so.

Mechanism

I propose a ranked-choice vote, like the one for the “Which creators should we grant residencies in Cohort 2?” proposal. I also recommend including a “Treasury” option for those — hopefully rare — cases where DAO members feel that the participating teams underwhelmed expectations so much that some or all of the CABIN should not be rewarded at all and instead returned to the treasury. As a reminder, in our DAO, each voter can designate a percentage of votes to any option, rather than having to vote 100% for one.

Timing

Given the relatively small amount of CABIN to be distributed and the ongoing nature of incubation cohorts, I suggest the following timeline:

Vote begins: 1 week after each cohort ends

Vote duration: 1 week

Supporting materials

It is up to each team to present the strongest case for itself. Every team that participated in the cohort will be included in the voting, regardless of pod completion or future plans. Teams that wish to apply for the 3-month trial, are advised to submit at least a draft of that proposal. Other helpful materials may include:

  • Forum updates
  • Discord updates
  • Photos and videos of work done
  • Testimonials from other Cabiners or others involved with their project

Judging criteria

While it’s entirely up to each DAO member to judge the merit of each team’s progress, here I offer a few personal thoughts — merely as a starting point for the conversation and not as any guide:

  • How well has the team delivered on their stated goal for the 1-month incubation period?
  • How clear is their vision?
  • How good was their communication with the DAO?
  • Have they demonstrated a high likelihood of being able to implement it?

Questions?

Does this voting mechanism make sense? Do you find it reasonable? What’s missing? What could be improved?

Thanks for starting this thread @Dahveed, but I wonder if it might be more of an open discussion, tied to the Ideation Pod proposal?

I had a lot to say, so I stated this open discussion thread that proposes options around using Gift Circles, with some questions and calls for other ideas.

This makes sense. I like that it’s simple and lets people flexibly express their gratitude and support for each pod.

One thing I’d suggest is that for each vote, you add an additional option for “Ideation Pod Stewards”. This is similar to the Treasury option, but lets people vote to send Cabin to you and the other stewards for your time spent stewarding the pod itself (separate from any concrete ideas you’re incubating).

Since you’re not asking for any compensation for your steward roles, this would give people the option to support your work.

Oh yeah, didn’t think about that. Like a tip for the Stewards.

this is a cool idea!

This idea makes sense to me. The easiest way would be to set up a snapshot instance for these votes. If you wanted it to be fully onchain (not sure if that’s necessary for this) you could use a tool like https://www.jokerace.io/.

One small correction of terminology: the type of voting you’re describing that we’ve used in the past is not ranked choice, it’s multi-choice. You can allocate your votes in any amount you want to anyone vs. just rank order them.

ah, thanks for the clarification!
